Engineering Manager

Butch Herbst is the Engineering Manager at Burnstone Mine. His experience spans over 31 years in the mining of precious and base metals, as well as other heavy industries. Mr. Herbst began his career at Impala Platinum in 1980, and qualified as an Artisan in 1985. He then trained as a Junior Engineer at Stilfontein Gold Mines, and gained further experience at Lesley, Winkelhaak, Bracken, Kinross and Grootvlei Mines during his studies. In 1993, after working at Goldfields’ Beatrix Mine, he began his own engineering consulting business where, for 17 years his firm engaged and serviced a full spectrum of industries. He then joined Zululand Anthracite Colliery as Engineering Manager before joining Great Basin Gold. He became a member to ECSA in 1989, Member of the Institute of Certificated Mechanical and Electrical Engineers of South Africa and is also a member to the South African Institute of Colliery Engineers.

Mr. Herbst holds a Mechanical Engineer Certificate of Competency and a National Technical Diploma in Engineering. He also holds the qualifications for the Electrical Engineers Certificate of Competency.
